Source: Syrian Army to Regain Control of More Regions before Upcoming Election

The Syrian army plans to restore security to the Northern and Eastern parts of the country in a bid to pave the way for the participation of the people in the upcoming presidential election, informed sources said on Wednesday.

“Security will soon be restored to regions in several several parts of the country in the East and the North,” an informed Syrian source told FNA.

The source noted that this security plan will soon be extended and practiced in the city of Raqqa that is presently under the control of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

Meantime, a senior Syrian lawmaker told FNA that many people are eagerly waiting for the army to regain control over the regions where they live in.

Elections in Syria are scheduled for June 3. Last month, the Syrian parliament passed a new law on elections stipulating a presidential candidate must be backed by at least 35 members of country’s Legislative Assembly. He should also be not younger than 40 and must have lived in Syria for the last 10 years.

Assad was unanimously nominated by the Syrian parliament for president in 2000 following the death of his father, former President Hafez Assad. He was re-elected in 2007 to a second term after receiving 97.62 percent of the votes.

He has not yet announced if he will be running for reelection.
