Spanish workers protest new austerity package in Madrid

Spanish workers have staged protests, blocking streets and railways in the capital city of Madrid to protest against the new 65 billion euro austerity package.

In the latest show of anger, angry workers poured into the streets of Madrid, chanting slogans against the country’s bankers and politicians they consider responsible for the country’s economic crisis.

Madrid has been scene of three consecutive days of widespread anti-austerity protests, since the country’s Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, announced new round of spending cuts on Wednesday July 11.

On the very same day the protests turned violent, leaving over 20 protesters injured after clashes with police.

The widespread protests have brought the traffic into a standstill in Madrid and the railways are blocked.

The workers are angry with the unbearable, ever increasing austerity measures, implemented by the government in a bid to tackle the debt-ridden South European country’s financial crisis.

The newly announced financial reforms, including tax increases and cuts, are meant to fulfill the country’s deficit-cutting commitments.

Spain is among the most affected Eurozone countries, with a high jobless rate and a sluggish economy.
