Speaker: Iran first in aid delivery to Somalia

The Somali Parliament Speaker has hailed Iran’s Red Crescent Society (IRCS) for pioneering in the shipment of humanitarian relief aid to the famine-hit Somalis.

Somalia’s Parliament Speaker Sharif Hassan Sheik Aden told IRNA on Tuesday that the IRCS was the first in delivering relief aid to the Somali people during a time of severe drought and famine.

He also said more than a third of people in the Horn of Africa state are facing death over starvation, as international aid slowly trickles in the African country.

Sheik Aden further criticized international relief groups and some Muslim nations for their slow response to the famine in his country.

Meanwhile, Iran has sent its third humanitarian aid shipment to Somalia. Iran’s Red Crescent Society says the aid was dispatched by air. The organization plans to send a fourth batch of relief supplies via sea in the coming days.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Salehi is also scheduled to visit Somalia in the near future.
