A senior Sunni member of the Iranian Parliament voiced regret over the Friday night’s incident at the Grand Mosque during storms in the Muslim holy city of Mecca which killed and wounded hundreds of Haj pilgrims, and said Saudi Arabia should no more be in charge of the Haj ceremony.

“This incident is the result of the Saudi regime’s imprudence and carelessness and they should have increased the safety factor for the construction projects around Kaaba,” Hedayatollah Mir-Moradzehi told FNA on Sunday.

He said that if Islamic countries within the framework of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) take the responsibility of handling the Haj ceremony, much better results will be yielded.

Mir-Moradzehi underscored that Kaaba doesn’t merely belong to Saudi Arabia and it is for all the Muslims and therefore all of them should cooperate in running and administering the Haj ceremony.

At least 107 people were killed and 238 more were injured when a crane collapsed on to the Grand Mosque during storms in the Muslim holy city of Mecca on Friday.

In relevant remarks on Saturday, another senior Iranian lawmaker blasted the Saudis for their inability to run the most important Muslim event.

“The Saudi regime showed that it doesn’t have enough capability to secure the safety of the pilgrims and manage the Haj ceremony,” member of the Iranian parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Javad Jahangirzadeh told FNA.

He said that the Saudi government should account for the death and injury of innocent pilgrims killed and wounded in the incident.

Storms were lashing the Saudi city of Mecca when strong winds brought down the crane that was part of construction works.

Tons of rubble and debris crashed to the ground on top of scores of people gathering in the mosque for 6:30 prayers when a section of the crane crashed through the roof.

In footage released on to social media last night the crane can be seen toppling towards a three-story section of the mosque complex, before smashing into the roof.
