Supreme Leader’s Aide Views Turkey as “Losing Side” in Syria

A senior military aide to the The Leader of Islamic Ummah and Oppressed People Imam Sayyed Ali Khamenei criticized the Turkish government’s hostile policies towards Syria, and cautioned Ankara that it will definitely be the losing side in the conflict.

Addressing a Basij (volunteer force) gathering in Iran’s Northern city of Ardebil on Monday, senior military aide to The Leader of Islamic Ummah and Oppressed People Imam Sayyed Ali Khamenei Major General Yahya Rahim Safavi said as regard the present conflict in Syria, Turkey is serving as a tool in the hands of the US.

“In hitting Syria, Turkey, as a US proxy, and the financial support of certain Arab states are, in fact, the main actors, and it is, of course, the main loser of this battle field and has been used like an instrument by the trans-regional powers,” Safavi noted.

He pointed to growing popular protests against Ankara’s anti-Syria policies, and noted that the people of Turkey are Muslims and naturally oppose their country’s policies against Syria as another Muslim state.

Last week, thousands of the Turkish people staged a rally in Antakya province at the country’s border with Syria to express their protest against Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s hostile policies on Syria.

During the rally, people shouted slogans in support of the Syrian nation and President Bashar al-Assad and his war on terrorists.

They also deplored Erdogan’s government for anti-Syrian policies.

Reports from Syria said that Ankara is playing a major role in the events taking place in Syria, especially through providing weapons and logistical backup for terrorists.

Western media outlets reported that Turkey and the United States have expanded intelligence cooperation in a joint campaign against Syria.

Officials said Ankara and Washington have agreed to high-level intelligence sharing and coordination to help armed rebels and terrorists oust Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The officials said the cooperation would include helping the rebels, WorldTribune said in a report.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011 with organized attacks by well-armed gangs against Syrian police forces and border guards being reported across the country.

In October, calm was eventually restored in the Arab state after President Assad started a reform initiative in the country, but Israel, the US and its Arab allies are seeking hard to bring the country into chaos through any possible means. Tel Aviv, Washington and some Arab capitals have been staging various plots in the hope of stirring unrests in Syria once again.

The US and its western and regional allies have long sought to topple Assad and his ruling system. Media reports said that the Syrian rebels and terrorist groups have received significantly more and better weapons in recent weeks, a crime paid for by the Persian Gulf Arab states and coordinated by the United States.

The US daily, Washington Post, reported in May that the Syrian rebels and terrorist groups battling the President Bashar al-Assad’s government have received significantly more and better weapons in recent weeks, a crime paid for by the Persian Gulf Arab states and coordinated by the United States.

The newspaper, quoting opposition activists and US and foreign officials, reported that Obama administration officials emphasized the administration has expanded contacts with opposition military forces to provide the Persian Gulf nations with assessments of rebel credibility and command-and-control infrastructure.

Opposition activists who several months ago said the rebels were running out of ammunition said in May that the flow of weapons – most bought on the black market in neighboring countries or from elements of the Syrian military in the past – has significantly increased after a decision by Saudi Arabia, Qatar and other Persian Gulf states to provide millions of dollars in funding each month.
