Switzerland wants diplomacy on Iran

As the US and its allies seek to impose tougher sanctions against Iran’s nuclear work, Switzerland urges diplomacy to settle the ongoing nuclear dispute.

Switzerland believes that differences between members of the international community including the dispute over Iran’s nuclear program should be resolved through negotiations and diplomacy, Swiss Ambassador to Tehran Livia Leu Agosti said Tuesday in a meeting with Iran’s Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani.

The remarks come as Washington and its allies accuse Iran of making clandestine efforts to make atomic weapons.

Under such pretext, certain Western countries are seeking to persuade the undecided veto-wielding members of the UN Security Council, Russia and China, to sign a resolution slapping new sanctions on Iran.

This is while Tehran, which is a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), says pursuing nuclear technology for civilian purposes is well within its rights as a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Leu Agosti, who represents US interests in Tehran, also took a swipe at measures taken in certain Western states to desecrate Islamic values.

“The Swiss government has the utmost respect for freedom of religions,” the Swiss ambassador said.

She went on to condemn anti-Islamic measures that seek to provoke the anger of the Muslim community across the globe.

Reacting to the issue, Iran’s Larijani lashed out at the West for taking measures against the world of Islam, saying such” Western insults to the Islamic world will bear no result, but incite the anger of Muslims throughout the world.”
