Syria aggressors to get caught in quagmire

A senior Iranian military commander has warned that any attack against Syria will not be limited to the country and that aggressors will get caught in a quagmire.

“We are on the threshold of a strategic turning point regarding the fate of this region and more generally [the future of] the Muslim world,” the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC)’s second-in-command, Brigadier General Hossein Salami, said on Tuesday.

“What we are witnessing now is the outcome of the repeated losses that the US and its Western and regional allies have incurred… over the past three decades,” the general added.

Salami noted that the United States, the Israeli regime and their regional allies have failed to reach their long-term objectives in the Middle East despite having exhausted their strategies.

“These defeats have led the United States to try to penetrate into the center of gravity of the [anti-Israeli] Islamic resistance front, which is Syria,” he said.

Salami cautioned that war on Syria will be “a very dangerous game,” stressing that there is no military solution to the Syrian conflict and that Israel must reconsider its security strategies.

Describing the Middle East as the “world of political dominos,” the Iranian commander said, “If a [world] power talks about the concept of limited war, it is making the biggest historic mistake.”

Salami said the time of trial and error is over for the US, adding that launching an attack against Syria would drive the American forces into a “quagmire of time and place.”

“Who can guarantee that a military attack against Syria will remain confined to within the geographical borders of Syria?” he added.

“Can someone guarantee that if they interfered in Syria within the US strategic framework, the backlash from this interference would not endanger their own national security? … Can plans made on paper contain a fire in a gunpowder depot?”

“Syria is a country which, as a main pillar of resistance, has been targeted by security, political and military assaults, although the resistance of the Syrian people, army and government over the past three years is praiseworthy,” Salami said.

Hailing Syria as one of the countries that have stood up to Israel for more than five decades, Salami warned the US and its allies against military action on Damascus.

“If Americans had not made mistakes in the past, maybe we would not be making these remarks as forcefully, but because the Americans’ behavior and actions in the region have been replete with mistakes, we warn them not to make yet another one,” the Iranian commander said.

Referring to the fact that Syria has decided to defend itself, Salami said, “The history shows that any nation that honorably defends itself will finally turn its territory into a cemetery for aggressors.”

The rhetoric of war against Syria first gained momentum on August 21, when the militants operating inside Syria and the foreign-backed Syrian opposition claimed that 1,300 people had been killed in a government chemical attack on militant strongholds in the Damascus suburbs of Ain Tarma, Zamalka and Jobar.

Damascus categorically rejected having had any role in the chemical attack.

Nevertheless, a number of Western countries, including the US, France, and the UK, quickly started campaigning for war.
