Syria and Iran stress on combating terrorism as Geneva 2 conference’s priority

20140107-142023_h521088Syria and Iran stressed that the priority of the upcoming international Geneva 2 conference on Syria should be combating terrorism and halting financial support and arms supplies to the takfiri terrorist groups through pressuring the countries backing these groups.

During a meeting on Tuesday, Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister Fayssal Mikdad and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif warned of the danger posed by the terrorist acts committed by the terrorist groups in Syria to the region’s security and stability, calling for concerted regional and international efforts to fight and uproot terrorism.

Both sides discussed the latest developments pertaining the forthcoming international conference on Syria and bilateral coordination on it, with al-Mikdad stressing that Syria is going to the conference.

He affirmed the necessity to secure all requirements of the conference’s success so as to come to combating terrorism and ending support to the takfiri terrorist groups and heading towards dialogue among the Syrians under a Syrian leadership without preconditions and with rejection of any foreign interference and stress on the Syrian sovereignty.

The Deputy Foreign Minister highlighted the importance of Iran’s participation in Geneva 2 conference without preconditions given its key role in solving the regional and international issues, expressing thanks to Iran for its supportive stances towards Syria in the face of the terrorist war waged against it.

The Iranian Foreign Minister, for his part, asserted the need for concerted efforts to fight the terrorism which has ravaged Syria and is spreading through the region and jeopardizing its security and stability.

“The solution to the situation in Syria is a political solution through dialogue among the Syrians themselves without any interference in the Syrian affair,” said Zarif, stressing Tehran’s continued support to bolster the Syrian people’s steadfastness.

In a relevant context, al-Mikdad discussed with Iranian Assistant Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdullahian the preparations for holding Geneva 2 conference so as to serve the interests of the Syrian people and their sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.
