Syria’s army will continue to gain victory over foreign-backed militants fighting the government of President Bashar al-Assad, a retired general tells Press TV in an interview.

Hisham Jaber, a retired major general in Beirut, said on Wednesday that the militants fighting in Syria are unfamiliar with the Syrian territory.

“What are the reasons the Syrian army is making success? Because those…[militants] are foreigners, they do not know the land,” he said, adding, that the “well-equipped” Syrian troops “know their lands and they are really qualified.”

“All those reasons explain the Syrian army advance and the Syrian army success on the land in Syria,” noted the general.

Jaber speculated that President Assad would look for a “peaceful solution” to the crisis in Syria after militants have been fully defeated.

On Tuesday, Syrian troops staged a massive operation to purge the central city of Homs of foreign-sponsored militants fighting against the Damascus government.

The development came a day after Syrian army units killed many terrorists and destroyed their hideouts in the towns of al-Sarkha, Bakha’a and al-Jibbeh in Qalamoun region.

The militants who were not killed escaped out to Housh Arab suburbs of the capital or to the Lebanese border and the army continued to chase them down.

On Sunday, Syrian troops regained the control of eastern heights overlooking Rankous plain, cutting off the militants’ supply routes between the Lebanese border and the area.

Syria has been the scene of a deadly crisis since March 2011. Reports say more than 130,s000 people have so far been killed and millions displaced in the foreign-backed militancy.
