Syria asks UN to prevent any US-led aggression

Syria has asked the United Nations to prevent any US-led aggression against it as the United States appears to be moving toward taking military action against the Arab country.

According to Syria’s official news agency, SANA, Syria’s ambassador to the UN Bashar Ja’afari called for UN intervention in a letter to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday.

“The Syrian government calls on the UN Secretary-General to assume his responsibilities … and to make efforts to prevent any aggression against Syria,” Ja’afari wrote in the letter.

The letter also urged the United Nations to help find a “peaceful political solution” to the 30-month-long crisis in Syria. Ja’afari said in the letter that the Syrian government was not involved in a deadly chemical attack on August 21, over which Washington is calling for punitive strikes against the Syrian military.

“The Syrian government repeats once again that it has never used chemical weapons,” Ja’afari said.

He also accused Washington of moving toward taking military action against Syria over Syria’s opposition to US foreign policies.

“The world was expecting the United States to play its role as a sponsor of peace … by preparing seriously for the Geneva conference on Syria, and not as a country that uses military force against those who oppose its policies,” he added.

The call for military strike against Syria intensified after the Takfiri militants and the foreign-backed Syrian opposition accused the government of President Bashar al-Assad of launching a chemical attack on militant strongholds in the suburbs of Damascus, which killed hundreds of Syrians.

The Syrian government has vehemently rejected the claims, saying the attack was carried out by the militants to draw in military intervention.

US President Barack Obama delayed an imminent military strike against Syria on August 31 to seek approval for the move from the Congress, which will debate the issue when lawmakers return from recess on September 9. The Obama administration has, however, said it “has the right” to attack Syria even if the Congress does not approve the measure.
