Syria censures deadly US strikes on civilians in Raqqah, Dayr al-Zawr

Syria has written to the United Nations, severely condemning recent fatal airstrikes by the US-led coalition against civilians as illegal and a breach of its sovereignty.

More than 26 people were killed and scores injured in the coalition air raids on al-Ekirshi village in Syria’s Raqqah Province on Monday.

Similar strikes targeted the city of Abu Kamal in Dayr al-Zawr Province on the same day, killing over 31 people, most of them children and women.

The US-led coalition denied role in the Dayr al-Zawr airstikes, but the so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights emphasized that a coalition plane was probably behind the raids.

The US-led coalition aerial assaults are a “blatant aggression against the Syrian people and flagrant violation of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Syria’s Foreign and Expatriates Ministry said in two letters addressed to UN Secretary General  Antonio Guteres and the world body’s Security Council, the official SANA news agency reported on Tuesday.

The Raqqah “death toll is expected to rise due to the number of severely injured civilians and the huge destruction caused by the US-led coalition attack to the houses,” the ministry said.

The coalition has admitted to the killing of hundreds of innocent civilians during its operations in Syria, so there is no doubt about the catastrophic consequences of the strikes on the Syrian people, it added.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry further noted that the coalition strikes do not target terrorists and their allies, but rather civilians, enabling militants to commit more crimes in Syria.

The real enemies to the Syrian people are terrorist groups such as Daesh and Jabhat Fateh al-Sham , which the US-led coalition as well as Saudi Arania, Turkey, Qatar and Britain supply with weapons and funds in order to achieve their goal of destroying Syria and killing its people, it pointed out.

The ministry also reiterated Syria’s call on the UN Security Council to help stop the coalition attacks against the Syrian people.

The US-led coalition has been conducting air raids against what are said to be Daesh terrorists inside Syria since September 2014 without any authorization from the Damascus government or a UN mandate. The strikes have led to civilian deaths and failed to fulfill their declared aim of countering terrorism.
