President of the European Council Herman van Rompuy says the international community must seek a political solution to the Syrian conflict.

“There is no military solution to the Syrian conflict, only a political solution can end the terrible bloodshed, great violations of human rights and a far-reaching destruction of Syria,” Van Rompuy said on the sidelines of the G-20 Summit in Saint Petersburg, Russia on Thursday.

He added that the parties to the Syrian conflict must be active at the negotiating table, and Russia must play a key role in the talks.

Van Rompuy also urged UN investigators to publish the findings of a probe into an alleged chemical attack outside Damascus last month.

The statements come as the US insists on waging military action against the Arab nation despite a growing global opposition to such a move.

The rhetoric of war against Syria first gained momentum on August 21, when the militants operating inside the Middle Eastern country and the foreign-backed Syrian opposition claimed that over a thousand people had been killed in a government chemical attack on militant strongholds in the Damascus suburbs.

Damascus categorically rejected the accusation as part of a plan to draw in military intervention.
