Syria: Damascus Water Pipelines Go on Stream, 2500 Militants Stop Fighting against Gov’t Forces

Ein al-Fijeh’s water facilities in Wadi al-Bardi in Western Ghouta have been repaired and all the water pipelines stretched from the reservoirs to Damascus have come back into operation, the Russian defense officials announced on Wednesday.

“The water supplies to the Syrian capital have almost been restored in Wadi Bardi,” Lt. Gen. Sergei Rudskoi, the chief of the Russian General Staff Main Operational Directorate said, adding that “As many as 2,500 militants have laid down their arms”.

The Syrian army started its military operation against the al-Nusra Front (that has recently renamed to Fatah al-Sham Front) in Damascus countryside nearly 50 days ago, capturing the entire villages and towns in Wadi al-Bardi region.

The General Command of Syria’s Armed Forces had announced earlier that the country’s soldiers and popular forces have restored sustainable security and stability to the towns and villages in Wadi al-Bardi region in Western Ghouta after a series of successful anti-terrorism operations.

The General Command stressed that the military operations in Wadi al-Bardi took place in a complex geographical region with the ultimate caution to avoid civilian casualties.

The government forces engaged in a six-week-long battle with al-Nusra in Wadi al-Bardi and drove terrorists out of all villages and towns in the region, restoring security to over 400sq/km of territories in Western Ghouta in Damascus province.

A field source had said that terrorists inflicted major damage on Ein al-Fijeh water facilities, adding that the al-Nusra has deliberately destroyed parts of the water facilitates in Ein al-Fijeh to put the Syrian army under pressure and incite people to revolt against the government.

The terrorist groups, deployed in Northwestern Damascus, had contaminated a main source of drinking water of Damascus city and its suburb with a large volume of Mazut in late December to revenge their defeats in the battle against the Syrian Army troops in Wadi al-Bardi region.

The Damascus City Water Supply and Sewerage Company cut off the water supply line coming from Ein al-Fijeh and started to pump water for the city and its countryside from other sources.

A security official said that this is the first time terrorists carry out such acts, adding that terrorist groups used to explode or cut off pipe lines or pumping station in the region.

Terrorist groups, then, shut off the gas flow to the city in its countryside, forcing millions of civilians into dire humanitarian situation.

Syria has been mired in bloody war since March 2011, with Damascus forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad fighting tens of terrorist groups.
