Syria releases detainees from prison under siege, for ‘humanitarian reasons

Syrian authorities have freed 366 prison detainees in Aleppo for “humanitarian reasons,” as the northern city falls under rebel siege, state news agency SANA reports.
The Nusra Front and other Islamist rebel groups have been laying siege to the compound for eight months now. The pro-rebel Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says pardons are being given because of the “horrific” conditions in the prison, which include disease outbreaks, among them tuberculosis.
The NGO Red Crescent has been distributing food and other aid to the prison, which holds upwards of 3,000 prisoners.
