Syrian army troops continue their push to free more areas from militants’ control in the northwestern city of Aleppo and near the capital Damascus.

Government troops recaptured positions in the town of Tel Hasel on the outskirts of Aleppo on Friday.

A Syrian television has described the advance as “a major gain” for the army.

The new advancement came a day after the troops seized full control of the strategic town of al-Qalamoun in northeast of the capital.

Syrian soldiers also managed to regain control of the towns of Hawarin and Mahin in the eastern countryside of Homs Province.

The army says foreign-backed militants have suffered heavy losses during the recent mop-up operations.

In recent weeks, the Syrian Army has made fresh advances in its fight against foreign-backed militants.

According to the UN, more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions displaced in the deadly unrest that has gripped Syria since March 2011.

The Western powers and their regional allies — especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey — are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.

In May, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said militants from as many as 29 different countries are fighting against his government forces in different parts of the country.
