Syrian forces have attacked foreign-backed militants near Aleppo International Airport as the army continues its mop-up operation in the northwestern city, Press TV reports.

The militants were reportedly moving their forces to Aleppo’s northern belt when they were attacked by the Syrian army on Thursday.

The attack comes a day after the army announced it had made significant advances in Aleppo.

Meanwhile, Damascus has rejected reports that the al-Nusra Front terrorists have gained control of parts of the Minnegh military airbase in Aleppo.

Syrian troops have also reportedly killed four militant commanders in the Syrian capital’s suburbs of Harasta and Douma.

The Syrian army says its helicopters have also targeted a group of militants crossing the border into the Lebanese village of Aarsal.

On June 12, Syrian forces killed about 120 gunmen near Aleppo. The army has also regained full control of Kafar Hamra, a suburb of Aleppo. Government forces liberated the area after heavy fighting with the foreign-backed militants.

The Syrian army’s latest success comes days after it recaptured the strategic western city of Qusayr. Following the Qusayr liberation, the army pledged to crush the foreign-backed militancy across the country.

On June 5, the Syrian state TV said Qusayr, which lies near the border with Lebanon, was under full control of the Syrian army following three weeks of fighting with militants. Syrian troops were backed by forces from the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah during the Qusayr operation.

Many people, including large numbers of Syrian soldiers and security personnel, have been killed since the Syria crisis erupted in March 2011.
