Over 60 injured as protesters clash with Egyptian police

Over 60 people have been injured in clashes between protesters and Egyptian police in Cairo.

At least 61 people were injured in skirmishes between demonstrators and police in central Cairo on Tuesday, Reuters reported.

The protesters were demanding that Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi punish those responsible for killings during the time the junta ruled the country after former dictator Hosni Mubarak was deposed.

The protest started on Monday, on the first anniversary of street violence between activists and security forces, in which 42 people were killed.

The police forces started throwing rocks at the protesters to stop them from removing concrete barriers, which block the way to the Interior Ministry.

The protesters, however, claim they have a court order, which allows them to remove the barriers.

“We support peaceful protests… but under all circumstances people cannot attack buildings or police because police protect our buildings and children,” Egyptian Prime Minister Hisham Kandil said on state television on Tuesday.

Police officers used tear gas to guard the Interior Ministry building and arrested nine protesters.

In Monday’s demonstration, at least 24 people were injured, including four policemen.

The Egyptians launched a revolution against the pro-Israeli regime in January 2011, which eventually brought an end to the 30-year dictatorship of former President Hosni Mubarak in February 2011.
