The Syrian Al-Qaeda group “Jabhat Al-Nusra” launched another powerful assault on the Abu Al-Dhuhour Military Airport inside the Idlib Governorate’s eastern countryside on Tuesday morning, attempting to bypass the Syrian Arab Army’s frontline defenses from two axes before they were officially routed by the latter during the wee hours on Wednesday morning.

Jabhat Al-Nusra began their assault on the Abu Al-Dhuhour Military Airport by sending two suicide bombers with their vehicle borne improvised explosive devices (VBIED toward the base’s western gates; however, the two Al-Qaeda militants were unsuccessful in reaching their destination, as the alert guards of the Syrian Armed Forces destroyed the enemy vehicles.

Following their unsuccessful suicide attacks, the Al-Qaeda militants stormed the western axis of the Abu Al-Dhuhour Military Airport, where they attempted to bypass the Syrian Arab Army’s fortifications at the main gate of this base.

Not long after they launched this attack on the western axes, Jabhat Al-Nusra would send another wave of fighters towards the Abu Al-Dhuhour Military Airport; however, this time, the armed combatants stormed the eastern gates of the base from their positions at the village of Khashayr.

These clashes would continue, intermittingly, throughout the night, until the Syrian Armed Forces – with the help of the Syrian Arab Air Force (SAAF) – finally routed the Islamist militants and secured the Abu Al-Dhuhour Military Airport.

According to a military source, the Jabhat Al-Nusra assault was a costly one for the Islamist group, as they lost 5 armored vehicles, including a T-55 Tank and a BMP, along with an estimated 50-60 casualties.
