The Syrian army regained control of a strategic region and the international highway in Deir Ezzur in Eastern Syria on Sunday.
The army units took control of Poursaeed Street in Deir Ezzur city and they also pushed back militants from Deir Ezzur-Damascus international highway and restored security to the road in an operation which started on Saturday and continued today.

The Syrian army also targeted and destroyed the gathering centers of the militants in Al-Sanaeh, Al-Hamidiya, Al-Mariya and Al-Mouhsen in Deir Ezzur city.

Meantime, residents of a border region in Eastern Syria clashed with the Al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front militants to force them out of the area.

The citizens of Mayadin, located in the East of Deir Ezzur Province, attacked the headquarters of the terrorist group and killed two militants.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011 with organized attacks by well-armed gangs and terrorists against both the army and civilians.

Tens of thousands of people have been killed since terrorist and armed groups turned protest rallies into armed clashes.

The government blames outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups for the deaths, stressing that the unrest is being orchestrated from abroad.
