Syrian Army launches potentially the last assault to capture Al-Sukhnah

The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) resumed their offensive inside of Al-Sukhnah, Thursday, striking the Islamic State’s (ISIL) defenses in the southwestern corridor of the city.

Backed by heavy airstrikes from their Russian allies, the Syrian Arab Army attempted to expand on the gains they made yesterday, pushing towards the city’s center amid fierce resistance from the Islamic State militants.

According to a military source in Palmyra, today’s assault may be the last attack on the city, if they manage to penetrate the Islamic State’s main line of defense at the southwestern corridor.

If the Syrian Army is successful in taking Al-Sukhnah, they will have dozens of kilometers of empty desert between their front-lines and the next town in the Deir Ezzor Governorate.
