Syrian Army on high alert in northern Latakia as jihadist rebels mobilize forces

The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) is on high alert in northern Latakia after reports of jihadist rebels mass gathering in the Jabal Al-Akrad region, a military source told Al-Masdar News this afternoon.

According to the military source, the Syrian Army believes the jihadist rebels of Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham are preparing to launch a big assault in northern Latakia in retaliation for the government’s offensive in the southern province of Daraa.

The jihadist rebels have been recently far more aggressive in both the Jabal Al-Akrad and Jabal Al-Turkmen regions of northern Latakia, as the presence of Turkish troops has limited the Syrian Army’s offensive capabilities near the border.

Further adding to the speculation of an imminent jihadist assault was a new media report by Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham’s media wing, which showed their fighters gathering in an unknown location in the mountains of Latakia.
