Syrian FM: West sanctions behind Syrian suffering’

Syria’s Foreign Minister Walid Muallem says Western sanctions imposed against Damascus are causing the population to suffer.

According to Press TV, during a meeting with Valerie Amos, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs on Saturday, Muallem urged the international body to “intervene to ensure US and EU sanctions are lifted.”
Muallem added US and EU sanctions “are responsible for the sufferings of Syrian citizens.”
For his part, Amos said the UN “will continue to provide humanitarian assistance in coordination with the Syrian government.”
The Syrian foreign minister also called on the United Nations to “contribute its efforts to rebuild infrastructure and hospitals that were destroyed by armed terrorist groups”.
