Syrian forces foil attempted car bomb attack in Aleppo

Syrian Security forces have foiled an attempted car bomb attack in the northern city of Aleppo, a day after twin bomb explosions killed scores of people in the capital.

According to Syria’s state television, security forces managed to kill a bomber as he was trying to blow up an explosive-laden minibus in Aleppo’s populated al-Shaar neighborhood on Friday.

Four tanks of explosives, weighing about 1,400 kilograms were found in the vehicle.

On Thursday, at least 55 people were killed and almost 400 others were injured in two car bomb explosions near a military intelligence building in the al-Qazzaz district of Damascus. Syrian officials blamed “foreign-backed terrorists” for carrying out the deadly attack, which is considered the deadliest since the beginning of the unrest in Syria last year.

The attack has drawn international condemnation with experts saying that the explosions aimed at undermining a peace plan brokered by UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan.

Meanwhile, Syrians representing independent figures and political parties have staged a demonstration in the capital to condemn the wave of bomb attacks in the country.

They also called on the United Nations to take steps to prevent certain countries from fueling unrest in Syria.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011. While the West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of the killings, Damascus blames ”outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
