Syrians stage another pro-Assad rally

Syrians have held yet another massive rally in the capital Damascus to express support for the government of President Bashar al-Assad.

Syrian citizens flocked to main squares in all of the Syrian Provinces on Saturday to show the level of support that the Syrian president enjoys, Sana news agency reported.

Demonstrators condemned all foreign interventions in their country. They blamed Western powers for the year-long unrest in Syria that has left thousands of people dead.

The Syrian government blames foreign-sponsored armed groups for creating deadly unrest across the country.

On Sunday, several Persian Gulf Arab states and the United States pledged 100 million dollars to provide salaries and communications equipment for Syrian rebels fighting against the government.

The countries made the offer at an Istanbul conference of the “Friends of Syria”, a grouping of some 70 Western and Arab countries, which Damascus calls the “enemies of Syria.”

Saudi Arabia and Qatar also backed the idea of arming the opposition against Bashar Assad’s government.

On March 27, Damascus accepted a six-point plan proposed by the UN-Arab league envy, Kofi Annan to end the unrest in Syria. On Monday, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad agreed to an April 10 deadline to implement the peace plan, which calls for a ceasefire, access for humanitarian aid agencies as well as political dialog between Damascus and the opposition.
