At least three members of the Afghan National Directorate of Security (NDS) have been killed and two others injured in a bomb attack in the eastern province of Khost.

Baryalai Rawan, a provincial governor spokesman, said the incident took place after a vehicle carrying the NDS members hit a roadside bomb in Khost city’s Beland Manzil area on Thursday afternoon.

A security official speaking on the condition of anonymity also confirmed the incident.

Later in the day, the Taliban issued a statement, claiming responsibility for the deadly attack.

Roadside bombs and improvised explosive devices are by far the most lethal weapons Taliban militants use against Afghan forces, foreign troops and civilians.

The United States and its allies entered the war in Afghanistan in October 2001 as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror. The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but after 12 years, the foreign troops have still not been able to establish security in the country.
