The Taliban militants in Afghanistan have attacked the governor’s office in the western province of Farah, with initial reports saying that at least three policemen have been killed.

According to reports, the clashes on Tuesday took place after an explosion outside the governor’s compound. Militants then detonated their explosives.

Officials say the Taliban militants are currently holed up inside the governor’s compound in Farah. Provincial officials say civilians have also been killed in the attack.

Deputy provincial governor Yonus Rasouli said that the explosion damaged many government buildings in the area.

The deadly attack comes after Afghan General Qadam Shah Shahim said on Tuesday that the militants were planning to increase their attacks against civilian and military institutions in 2013.

In October 2001, the United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan as part of the so-called war on terror. The offensive removed the Taliban regime from power, but insecurity remains across the country.

According to the United Nations, thousands of civilians have died and hundreds of thousands more displaced in Afghanistan since the US-led invasion.
