Tehran-Damascus ties can counter US-Zionist plots in region: Syria PM

Tehran-Damascus ties
Syrian Prime Minister Wael al-Halqi has underlined the significant role of the Tehran-Damascus relations in countering Zionist-US plots in the region.

Halqi highlighted the deeply rooted historical and strategic relations between the two countries in a meeting with Iran’s Ambassador to Damascus Mohammad-Reza Raouf-Sheibani on Wednesday.

He also called for the strengthening of the economic relations and trade transactions between the two countries.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of army and security personnel, have been killed in the turmoil. The Syrian government says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of militants are foreign nationals.

Damascus says certain Western states, especially the United States, and their regional allies are fueling the unrest.

On Wednesday, Iran’s Ambassador to Beirut Ghazanfar Roknabadi met with former Lebanese President Amine Gemayel and handed over a copy of Iran’s six-point peace plan on the resolution of the unrest in Syria to him.

Gemayel said that Lebanon agrees with and supports any political measure to solve the unrest in Syria, calling for negotiations to settle the crisis and restore stability and tranquility to the country.

On December 16, Iran unveiled the details of a six-point plan to resolve the ongoing crisis in Syria. The plan calls for an immediate end to all violent and armed acts.

The plan also calls for sending humanitarian aid to Syrians following the end of all conflicts, lifting all economic sanctions imposed against the country, and facilitating the return of the displaced Syrians to their homes.

It also urges talks between the Syrian government and the representatives of all Syrian groups regardless of their political and social tendencies in order to form a national reconciliation committee.
