Tehran’s International Cartoon Biennial 2013 comes to an end

Iran’s 10th International Cartoon Biennial, after over one month hosting various works created by the Iranian and foreign artists, was closed in Tehran.

This year’s winners were honored during a closing ceremony held at the Museum of Contemporary Arts on June 30, 2013.

Over 500 works were displayed at the 2013 biennial held at Tehran’s Saba Art and Cultural Institute, director of Iran’s Cartoon House Masoud Shojaei-Tabatabai had earlier announced.

The participants were required to focus on the themes of “Persian Cat”, “Dilemma” and “Superstition”.

‘Persian Cat’ was the theme of the caricature section and those ones who took part in the cartoon section were asked to focus on ‘Superstition’, while the comic strip section centered on ‘Dilemma’.

Iranian cartoonists contended for award with the artists from 89 countries such as Turkey, Brazil, Indonesia, China, France and Germany.

Jamal Rahmati, Bahram Azimi, Bahram Arjmand-Nia, Mohammad Reza Doust-Mohammadi and Ali Jahanshahi are Iranian artists who serve at the jury panel.

The panel also hosted two foreign jurors Angel Boligan from Mexico and Eduardo Baptistao from Brazil who were not present at the committee but contributed to final judgment via mail.

The Biennial was held by the Center for Visual Arts in collaboration with the Institute for Development of Contemporary Visual Arts and the Caricature House of Iran.

The 10th edition of International Cartoon Biennial kicked off on May 13 and came to an end on June 30, 2013.
