Terrorism common enemy of all world states: Ayatollah Rafsanjani

Akbar-Hashemi-RafsanjaniA high-ranking Iranian official has described terrorism as the “common enemy” of all world countries, calling for practical measures to end terrorism and extremism.

“Iran will provide the Iraqi government with the cooperation necessary to maintain efforts to protect its independence and sovereignty and fight any form of terrorism,” said Chairman of Iran’s Expediency Council Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani in a meeting with visiting Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari in Tehran on Thursday.

Ayatollah Rafsanjani mentioned solidarity and unity among the Iraqi people, collective measures to address disputes and the expulsion of terrorists from Iraq as the keys to a bright future for Iraq.

Rafsanjani also denounced the massacre of innocent people in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Pakistan, arguing that the current trend threatens the stability of the entire Middle East and serves the interests of the enemies of the Muslim world.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the top Iranian official said the political initiatives that take the demands of the Syrian people into full consideration can effectively end the nearly three years of crisis in Syria.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. Over 130,000 people have reportedly been killed and millions displaced due to the unrest.

Zebari, for his part, stressed the importance of enhanced strategic ties between Baghdad and Tehran and the future outcomes of such ties on the establishment of regional security and stability. He also briefed Ayatollah Rafsanjani on the latest developments in Iraq.

He warned that the exacerbation of the crisis in Syria poses serious risks not only to Iraq but also to all countries in the Middle East.

The Iraqi foreign minister went on to say that his country is suffering the most in the region from extremist movements, expressing hope that other countries would extend their assistance and cooperation to stop acts of terror.
