Israeli troops have attacked Palestinian protesters near the city of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank amid rising tensions over al-Aqsa Mosque, Press TV reports.

The clashes erupted in Beit El settlement near the city of Ramallah on Thursday when Israeli troops fired tear gas to disperse the demonstrators, who were angry over provocations by Israeli forces and settlers in Muslims’ third holiest site.

Israeli forces are using live ammunition against the Palestinians.

At least two Palestinians are reported to have been injured in the attacks by Israeli forces. At least one European photojournalist and his two Arab colleagues are also said to be among injured in the Israeli assault.

Palestinian shot dead

Meanwhile, Israeli police sources say a soldier shot and killed a Palestinian man along a busy Tel Aviv road on Thursday.

Israeli forces accused the man of having stabbed four people, including a trooper, with a screwdriver in Tel Aviv.

The attack is the latest in a bout of violence that has now spilled over into Israel’s heartland.

Tensions have been on the rise in the occupied West Bank and al-Quds (Jerusalem) in recent days.

The confrontations followed a wave of violence that saw Israeli settlers and soldiers attacking Palestinian worshipers in al-Aqsa compound.

Over the past two months, Israel has intermittently prevented the presence of Muslims at al-Aqsa Mosque compound during visits by Israeli settlers and officials.

On Wednesday, undercover Israeli forces, disguised as stone throwers, opened fire at a group of Palestinian protesters near Ramallah

The Israeli agents were hurling stones at Israeli soldiers for at least half an hour but couldn’t be recognized before pulling out their pistols. Three Palestinians were wounded in the violent clashes, including one critically.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) earlier said nearly 300 Palestinians had sustained injuries in clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinians across the occupied West Bank.

According to al-Bireh-based humanitarian organization, the number of those injured in clashes with Israeli forces has risen over 800 since October 3.
