Terrorists’ presence at peace talks ‘perilous’

Syrian Ambassador to Tehran, stressing that only the Syrian nation has the right to decide for the future of Syria, said the presence of terrorists at the negotiating table is dangerous for peace process in his country.

Adnan Mahmoud made the remark in a meeting with Iranian Parliament’s General Director for International Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in Tehran on Saturday, adding “the only viable solution to the Syrian crisis is a political approach and a serious focus on fighting terrorism.”

He deemed the new round of Geneva peace talks more promising compared with previous negotiations for achieving a political solution to the Syrian crisis, and commended the role of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the fight against terrorism.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran is our brother, and we are both fighting at the same front, and are optimistic about the future,” he said.

The Iranian official, for his part, once more congratulated Mahmoud on the liberation of the Syrian city of Palmyra from Takfiri terrorists, adding “Palmyra’s liberation shows the resilience and perseverance of the Syrian Army and Resistance forces in the fight against ISIL terrorist groups.”

“The presence of terrorists in Syria undermines peace and security in the Arab country and the whole region, and the Islamic Republic of Iran will continue its support to the Syrian government until a political solution has been implemented in the crisis-hit country,” he added.
