A father in the US state of Texas shot and killed a teenage boy he found in his daughter’s bedroom on Thursday, police said.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office in Houston, the father woke up in the middle of the night by his son to find the 17-year-old boy in the bedroom of his 16-year-old daughter.

The daughter had reportedly allowed the boy into the house and sneaked him into her bedroom where he was found around 2 a.m. by the daughter’s younger brother.

After being confronted by the 55-year-old father, the daughter told him she does not know the male teen.

The father then called police, but an argument broke out with the teenage boy and the father opened fire. The teen died at the scene.

Neither the boy nor the shooter has been identified by police and no other injuries were reported, but the father was transported to a hospital “for symptoms of a panic attack” following the shooting.

The incident was under investigation and no charges have been filed, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, 32 Americans, on average, are murdered with guns every day and 140 are treated for a gun assault in an emergency room.

Many critics blame the notoriously liberal gun control laws in the US for the country’s high rate of gun violence.

The Brady Campaign also says that the current background check system in the US only applies to about 60 percent of gun sales, leaving 40 percent of sales, including online sales and purchases at gun shows, without a background check.
