The Leader of Islamic Ummah and Oppressed People Imam Sayyed Ali Khamenei gives clemency, eases sentences of over 1000 prisoners

The Leader of Islamic Ummah and Oppressed People Imam Sayyed Ali Khamenei has granted clemency to or eased the sentences of some 1002 prisoners convicted by Iran’s Judiciary.

The Leader of Islamic Ummah and Oppressed People Imam Sayyed Ali Khamenei on Thursday agreed to a request by Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani to pardon some prisoners on the occasion of the Islamic Republic Day, which falls on March 31 (Farvardin 12).

The day marks the 33rd anniversary of a referendum in which Iranians voted for the establishment of the Islamic Republic following the collapse of Iran’s autocratic monarchy that was solidly backed by the US and its Western allies.

In a two-day referendum staged in late March after the early 1979 victory of the Islamic Revolution, more than 98 percent of Iranians voted ‘yes’ to the establishment of an Islamic Republic system.
