Three NATO trucks burn in Pakistan

Militants in Pakistan have torched three oil tankers carrying fuel supplies to NATO and US forces stationed in neighboring Afghanistan.

The oil tankers were intercepted by unknown gunmen riding motorcycles in southwestern Balochistan Province, Pakistani police officials told Press TV.

Police confirmed that the militants took the people on board hostage at gunpoint and set the trucks on fire in the Mongechar area of Kalat district late Saturday.

Over the past few weeks, militants have destroyed more than twenty NATO oil tankers. No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks so far.

Earlier on Saturday, one driver was killed and two others were injured when unknown gunmen attacked a NATO oil tanker in eastern Punjab Province.

The bulk of supplies and equipment required by NATO and US-led forces stationed in landlocked Afghanistan passes through Pakistan.

Pakistani authorities have deployed heavy contingents of police and military forces on all major routes to curb militant attacks on supplies trucked.

Despite the efforts hundreds of trucks and containers have been torched or plundered over the last few years in the restless tribal district along the Afghan border.

The attacks have forced the US-led military alliance to look for alternative routes to deliver supplies.
