At least 10 people have been killed and over 100 sustained injuries after a passenger train derailed in southern Indian state of Karnataka, officials say.

The accident occurred Friday morning when nine railroad coaches of the Bangalore-Ernakulam Intercity Express derailed near the town of Anekal, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the southern city of Bangalore.

Federal Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said that the accident may have been triggered by a boulder falling on the rail track.

The injured have been transferred to hospitals in Bengaluru and nearby Hosur in Krishnagiri district.

Meanwhile, Law Minister Sadananda Gowda, who rushed to the accident site immediately, warned of the rise of the death toll as he feared that “some dead bodies are still inside.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.

“I wish the injured a speedy recovery. Railway minister and officials are closely monitoring the situation and ensuring timely relief,” Modi said in a statement.

Train accidents are not uncommon in India as the nation has one of the world’s largest train networks, transporting about 20 million passengers each day. Most accidents are blamed on poor maintenance and human error.
