Turnout in Tehran Up by 10% Compared with Previous Run-Off Votes

Initial results of the second round of the ninth parliamentary elections in Tehran constituency indicated that public participation in the capital city was over 10% higher than the run-off votes in previous parliamentary elections.

Based on initial estimates and data analysis, over one million people have voted in the ninth parliamentary election in the Tehran constituency, meaning that 45% of those who were present at the polling stations in the first round on March 2 came to cast their votes in the second round yesterday.

But, a comparison between the run-off votes of the 8th and the 9th parliamentary elections in the Tehran constituency reveals that the number of the participants has grown this time.

Figures of the public turnout rate in the second round of the eight parliamentary elections four years ago showed that around 35% of those who had taken part in the first round of the legislative poll participated in the second round.

This means a 10% growth in public turnout in Tehran on May 4 elections compared with the run-off polls in the eight parliamentary elections.

On Friday, Head of Tehran’s Elections Headquarter Safar Ali Baratlou announced that public participation in the second round of the ninth parliamentary elections in Tehran constituency was higher than the run-off votes of previous parliamentary elections in the capital.

“People’s participation in Tehran, Rey, Shemiranat and Islamshahr constituency has witnessed an increase compared with the run-off vote in the eighth parliamentary elections,” Baratlou told FNA yesterday.

Earlier on Friday, Iranian Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar had also predicted that the number of the people participating in the run-off vote today would be higher than the turnout in previous parliamentary elections in the country.

Iran on Friday held the second round of the country’s ninth parliamentary elections in Tehran and many other cities across the country.

50 candidates were competing with each other once again to win one of the remaining 25 seats left for Tehran in the runoff elections.
