At least two cases of the deadly Ebola virus infection have been reported in Liberia, the country’s health ministry says.

According to the Liberian Health Minister Walter Gwenigale, a woman married to a man from neighboring Guinea died in Lofa County after returning from a trip to the country.

The second case was the same woman’s sister, who is reportedly still alive in a medical center outside Monrovia.

At least 80 people have reportedly lost their lives to the virus so far in Guinea.

Last week, Guinea confirmed that tens of people had tested positive in the country’s southern region.

The Ebola virus, which originated in southwest Guinea, spread to the capital, Conakry, earlier this week with hundreds of people now in isolation wards.

Doctors Without Borders says the situation in the region is being exacerbated by people not taking precautionary measures.

Ebola was discovered in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 1976. It remains one of the world’s most virulent diseases, killing between 25 to 90 percent of those who get infected by the virus.

It spreads through direct contact with blood and other bodily fluids, or the unprotected handling of the bodies of victims.

There is currently no known cure for Ebola.
