UAE agrees Iran’s condition for IIPU

A lawmaker says Iran will participate in a major regional summit after the United Arab Emirates decided not to pursue a proposal that the Islamic Republic deems “illegal”.

The UAE officials have decided to scrap plans to set up a “good offices committee in Abu Dhabi, which sought to launch a smear campaign against Iran” following Iran’s strong opposition, Head of Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi said on Tuesday.

Iran’s Majlis (parliament) had earlier announced that it would not attend the extraordinary summit of Islamic Inter-Parliamentary Union (IIPU) to protest the UAE plans.

Boroujerdi described the UAE bids for the committee as “illegal and unacceptable”.

Speaker of UAE House of the Federal National Council Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair asked Iran’s Majlis Speaker to attend the summit in a phone conversation, promising to remove the formation of the committee from the agenda of the summit, IRNA quoted Boroujerdi as saying.

Speaker of the National Assembly of Kuwait also announced his opposition to the controversial committee and stressed the importance of Iran’s presence at the summit, Boroujerdi said.
