UAE condemns violence in Egypt

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has condemned the recent sectarian violence in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, in which 12 people were killed.

The UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Mohammed Gargash urged Egyptians to resist attempts to “disrupt their country’s security and stability,” AFP reported on Monday.

On Sunday, Egypt’s health ministry officials said 12 people were killed and more than 232 others were injured in clashes between Salafis and Coptic Christians in Cairo’s northwestern district of Imbaba.

Expressing solidarity with Cairo, Gargash said Egypt has been known for religious tolerance for thousands of years.

Egypt’s ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces said more than 190 suspects were detained following the deadly violence.

Egypt’s Justice Minister Abdel Aziz al-Gindi said after a cabinet meeting on Sunday that the transitional government would “strike with an iron hand all those who seek to tamper with the nation’s security.”
