UK beating drums of war over Malvinas

British monarchy and government insist on their colonial stand, after planning to dispatch an advanced warship and an heir to throne to the “occupied” Malvinas Islands, fuelling speculations that it is considering a war against Argentina over the archipelago.

British government has announced that it was deploying its most sophisticated warship, destroyer HMS Dauntless, and the Duke of Cambridge to the South Atlantic to secure its last colony in Latin America.

Analysts condemned UK’s decision, believing the move will also send a powerful message to the Argentina government that who acts as the “colonialist.”

Argentina government expressed dismay over the war policy of the British government, condemning the deployment of the warship and the planned tour of duty of Prince William in the occupied Falklands islands while wearing “the uniform of the conqueror.”

In as statement, Argentine foreign ministry responded bitterly to Britain’s provocative move to post the Duke to spend six weeks on the islands as an RAF search-and-rescue pilot. His presence reminds the Argentineans of his uncle Prince Andrew, also a helicopter pilot, who flew missions during 74-day war in 1982 that left 650 Argentines and about 300 British soldiers dead.

“Prince William is coming in the Malvinas as a member of the armed forces of his country,” the statement read. “The Argentinean people regret that the royal heir is coming to the soil of the homeland with the uniform of the conqueror and not with the wisdom of a statesman who works in the service of peace and dialogue between nations.”

Buenos Aires has repeatedly called on the United Nations to mediate talks about the islands, a British colony for over 180 years. However, UK foreign relations vice minister Jeremy Brown said that the sovereignty of the islands was “non-negotiable” and that UK government would plan to “guarantee their security.”

The bitter tone of Argentina’s statement, entitled “More Diplomacy Less Weapons,” revealed that they were strongly against the war signals of the UK government. “The Republic of Argentina rejects the British attempt to militarize a conflict that the United Nations already has said on numerous occasions both nations should resolve in bilateral negotiations,” the statement concluded.

As 30th anniversary of the Argentina-Britain war nears, the dispute over the territory is heating up once again. Analysts warn that the news of UK plans to send a warship to the region could not stymie the war of words between the two nations.
