UK economy devastates family life

The results of a recent survey have revealed that British households believe financial problems and job insecurity are devastating their family lives.

The survey, which was conducted by the Family and Parenting Institute on over 2,000 parents of children under the age of 18, showed that nearly 70 percent of the families believed financial pressure constituted the biggest reason for their problems at home.

Moreover, 75 percent of the households said that stress and job insecurity played a key role in subverting happiness and harmony in their homes as one in four expressed fears of job loss.

Nearly 40 percent of the families also mentioned long working hours as a source of trouble at home.

Chief executive of the Family and Parenting Institute Katherine Rake urged the government to wake up to the “alarming” crisis faced by the country’s households.

“The financial pressures are such that people are feeling extraordinary levels of anxiety and, as always, the family is the first shock absorber in difficult times,” she said.

Problems faced by British households are to be highlighted at the institute’s Parents’ Week campaign on Monday, as Rake maintained, “There is a human consequence to the financial problems we are facing and everyone is feeling under the cosh.”
