A leading British anti-nukes campaign group says the country’s Prime Minister David Cameron promotes nuclear proliferation blasting his double standard of approving nukes for an exclusive group of nations while banning others from having such weapons.

Cameron wrote in an article for The Daily Telegraph on Thursday that London would be “foolish” to abandon Trident nuclear weapons.

In response, General Secretary of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament Kate Hudson said Cameron is “promoting a logic of proliferation” despite international calls for a global commitment to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

CND said Cameron is paradoxically saying that “a world without nuclear weapons is a fine ideal” while adding “I am determined that we will maintain [nuclear weapons] for generations to come”.

Hudson said it is “vital” that the international community tackles the issue of nuclear weapons “once and for all.”

“But this cannot be done by saying that we and a select group can have nuclear weapons – and engage in aggressive military actions around the world – and that others can’t,” she said.

“If we say that replacing Trident is vital to protect us, for our national security – other states will come to the same conclusion. And that’s the logic David Cameron is promoting: a logic of proliferation,” she added, referring to the North Korea’s nuclear weapons program.

CND has launched a campaign to dissuade the government from pursuing its planned replacement for Trident nuclear weapons system at an annual cost of £3 billion and a total estimated cost of more than £100 billion.

The group says abandoning the replacement plan can bring huge changes to the life of ordinary people by keeping services the government is slashing to meet its austerity targets.

The groups says ending the plan means the government can “scrap student tuition fees for the next 30 years”, “employ 150,000 new nurses and teachers every year for over 30 years” or “fully fund all A&E Services in hospitals for over 40 years”.
