UK’s Afghanistan envoy to resign

Britain’s special representative to Afghanistan and Pakistan, Sir Sherard Cowper-Coles has resigned on Wednesday, the Foreign Office says.

Sir Sherard had been on “extended leave” from the role since June, after reports released by the Guardian announced a clash with NATO and US official leading the international troops over the strategy on fighting the Taliban.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) said that a separate representative was no longer required because of the changing situation, adding that the role will be handled by a policy chief, now fulfilled by Karen Pierce, FCO director for South Asia and Afghanistan.

“Sherard has made an invaluable contribution to UK policy towards Afghanistan and Pakistan. He showed great commitment, dedication and expertise during an important phase in international efforts in the region,” said Foreign Secretary William Hague.

“He has a very able successor in Karen Pierce. Afghanistan and Pakistan continue to be this Government’s top priority in foreign affairs.”
