UN-Arab League Special Envoy to Syria to Visit Iran Soon

New UN-Arab League Joint Special Envoy on Syria Lakhdar Brahimi is scheduled to pay a visit to Iran in the near future.

Brahimi made the announcement during a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi on the sidelines of the annual UN General Assembly meeting in New York.

Brahimi further stressed the necessity and the vital importance of consultations with Iran for the settlement of the Syrian crisis.

Salehi, for his part, referred to his recent trips to Cairo and Damascus to discuss ways of resolving problems in Syria, and said, “We believe that settling the Syrian issue is possible through coordinating the moves made by different sides.”

He also underlined the necessity for halting violence, preventing shipments of arms cargos to extremist groups in Syria, ending foreign countries’ interference in Syria’s internal affairs and holding national talks between the Syrian government and opposition groups.

The news came after Brahimi, in a phone conversation with Salehi earlier this month, emphasized Tehran’s constructive role in the settlement of the Syrian crisis.

During the phone talk between two officials, Brahimi highlighted Iran’s positive role in the Syrian developments, and stressed that political solution is the only way to restore durable peace in the Arab country.

He expressed hope that all the involved sides would help establish security in Syria as well as peace in the region.

Salehi, for his part, told the UN envoy that Iran is seeking a peaceful solution to Syrian crisis away from foreign interference.

He also told Brahimi that Iran is perfectly ready to help him to set up peace in Syria.

Former UN-Arab League Special Envoy on Syria Kofi Annan announced on August 2 that he was quitting because of the lack of international support for his peace plan.

On August 17, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon announced the appointment of Brahimi as the new joint special representative of the UN and the Arab League for Syria to replace Annan.
