UN biased towards opposition HR violations: Syria

UN biased towards opposition HR violations

Syria has criticized UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay for being biased towards Syria opposition and accusing Damascus of committing human rights violations.

Pillay’s comments are “part of an orchestrated pressure campaign” against Syria in the Security Council by France, Britain and the United States, Syrian Ambassador to the United Nations Bashar Ja’afari said on Tuesday.

He said that Pillay has never visited Syria, and she ignored hundreds of letters he has sent with reports of rebel abuse.

Her comments “confirm her biased reading from the beginning,” he said, adding that she “has become lunatic in her action, and is behaving irresponsibly.”s

Ja’afri’s remarks came shortly after Pillay accused Damascus of committing human rights violations in the Syrian conflict at a briefing to the UN Security Council. She said the Syrian government is “mostly responsible” for the human rights offenses in the three-year war.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies — especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey — are supporting the militants operating inside the country.

More than 150,000 people have reportedly been killed and millions displaced due to the turmoil that has gripped Syria for over three years.

The UN also says more than four million other Syrians will be forced out of their homes in 2014 by the escalating conflict in the country.

Two million Syrians are expected to take refuge outside the country while another 2.25 million are predicted to be internally displaced next year.
