UN human rights resolution against Iran is politicized: ambassador

Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations has called a recent Western-sponsored UN resolution on the human rights situation in Iran “politicized and counterproductive.”

Ambassador Mohammad Khazaei made the remarks at the 45th meeting of the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday.

He said the resolution was drafted “out of the urgencies and exigencies of Canadian internal politics… to advance its self-centered political interests.”

The Iranian ambassador stated that the Western-backed resolution “directs the environment towards further polarization and politicization of human rights in the UN,” and added that the resolution only serves “the short-sighted political interests of a few countries.”

He went on to say that the resolution includes “more than 150 unsubstantiated allegations” against the Islamic Republic.

It cannot “be considered the reflection of the actual situation on the ground [and] is contrary to rationality and reason. It is out of touch with the realities of the Iranian society because of relying on websites and partial media as the main source of information,” Khazaei said.

Commenting on Israel’s recent deadly onslaught against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, he stated, “The deadly silence of the so-called champions of human rights, such as Canada, vis-à-vis the recent inhumane and brutal attacks by the Zionist regime against innocent civilians in the besieged Gaza Strip is another… example of how these pseudo-champions are hypocritical in their advocacy of human rights.”

“The Canadian resolution against Iran solely seeks the political interests and goals of its sponsors. It certainly lacks credibility,” he said in conclusion.

On Tuesday, the Third Committee of the UN passed the non-binding resolution with 83 countries voting in favor, 31 against, and 68 abstentions.
