UN slams Germany over inequalities

A United Nations committee has blasted Germany for failing to secure equal opportunities for women, immigrants and poverty-stricken children.

The 10-page document accused Germany of discriminating against immigrants, denying basic social services for asylum seekers, failing to provide a proper standard of living for welfare recipients and not supporting the most vulnerable in the country, Der Spiegel reported.

It also said how one in four children go to school without eating breakfast, urging the government to take adequate measures “to ensure that children, particularly from poor families, receive proper meals.”

The report also voiced concern over unemployment in regions that make up former Communist East Germany, which it claims still doubles the rate of the western part of the country. It also said women suffer from discrimination in workplace due to “clich?d views of the roles of the sexes.”

The German government rejected the UN report on Wednesday, downplaying them on grounds that they “weren’t backed by scientific facts.”

“Germany has made progress in social welfare in recent years and this has been acknowledged around the world,” German Labor Ministry said in a statement.

Many social welfare analysts criticize Angela Merkel’s center-right coalition government for massive shortcomings in its social and education policies.

The report further mentioned that Germany had ignored UN’s recommendations made in its previous report on similar shortcomings four years ago.

The UN committee that filed the report was set up in 1985 and monitors economic, social and cultural rights in countries of the world.
