Unity govt boosts Palestine credibility

365082_Palestine-Hamas-FatahThe formation of a national Palestinian unity government will enhance Palestine’s international credibility, a political analyst tells Press TV.

“First of all, I think it’s a positive step because it’s going to give the Palestinians credibility in the United Nations and throughout most of the world,” Lawrence Davidson, professor at West Chester University, said in an interview with Press TV.

He added that there is “not much” Israel can do to create obstacles for the unity government in Palestine as the Israelis have already exhausted nearly everything at their disposal such as holding back taxes and taking territory.

“I guess what they might do is not allow people from the West Bank, government officials from the West Bank to travel to Gaza or vice versa, and therefore try to break communication between the two elements, which would force them to sort of set up shop someplace else as a government in exile,” the commentator said.
He further emphasized that the unity government is “a force to be reckoned with” on the international stage.

“Obviously, it’s not a force to be reckoned with militarily. But when it comes to, perhaps in the end, going to the International Criminal Court, or diplomatically rallying support around the globe, I think it is a force to be reckoned with,” Davidson pointed out.
On April 23, Gaza-based Palestinian resistance movement, Hamas, and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), which includes Fatah Party, reached a reconciliation deal to resolve their differences.

Under the deal, Hamas and Fatah would form a unity government to pave the way for national elections.

Acting Palestinian Authority chief Mahmoud Abbas said on Saturday that the line-up of the unity government would be announced on June 2.

Hamas and Fatah have been at odds since Hamas won the Palestinian parliamentary elections in January 2006. The dispute marginalized Hamas governance to the Palestinian territory of the Gaza Strip. Fatah, meanwhile, set up headquarters in the Palestinian territory of the West Bank.
