The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has strongly condemned recent deadly bombings that killed at least seven people in Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul.

In a statement issued on Friday, Security Council members “condemned in the strongest terms” the Thursday attacks.

One of the bombings targeted an event at a French-run high school. Afghan officials said a German citizen was among the victims.

The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack, saying a theater performance that was underway at the time was immoral.

In a similar bomb attack earlier in the day, six Afghan soldiers were killed and 11 others wounded when a bomber on foot attacked a bus carrying Afghan armed forces in the suburbs of Kabul. The Taliban militant group claimed responsibility for the attack.

Another explosion also struck near the Bagram Airbase, which is the largest US military base in Afghanistan.

The 15-member body “reiterated their serious concern at the threats posed by the Taliban, al-Qaeda and other terrorist and extremist groups, and illegal armed groups.”

The council also “underlined the need to bring perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism to justice.”

The Taliban group has vowed to escalate its attacks on Afghan forces and US-led troops, their bases, diplomatic missions and vehicle convoys before the foreign forces partially exit the country at the end of 2014.

The United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan in 2001 as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror. The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but insecurity remains across the country despite the presence of thousands of US-led troops.
