Uruguayan prison allows inmates to do business

The inmates in the Punta de Rieles prison in Uruguay manage their own businesses, wear casual clothes, do sports, have mobile phones and keep pets while serving their time.

In Punta de Rieles prison in Uruguay’s capital Montevideo, there’s no need for extra security. 500 prisoners can walk freely to work every day.

Most detainees work in a business they launched with the financial help of their families.

Inmates have been able to develop different start-ups such as a gym, yoga, theater and music workshops, a radio and a grocery shop.

To avoid illegal trade, money is not used. Instead, only coupons are valid.
